Ricardo J. Peláez is a career Foreign Service Officer and, in August 2017, began his assignment as the Acting Senior Commercial Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, Spain. He has 20 years of experience with the U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service.
Prior to Spain, Ricardo served for four years as the Commercial Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru. During his tenure in Lima, Ricardo led the office to achieve notable accomplishments such as the establishment of a three-person Regional Intellectual Property office covering Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, and Chile; closing the largest U.S. arms sale ($13.2 million) in a generation to the Peruvian National Police; and organizing three major Commerce-certified trade missions addressing critical infrastructure gaps in the renewable energy, healthcare and water resources sectors.
Prior to Peru, Ricardo served a two year assignment as a Commercial Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, China. In this capacity, Ricardo led a team of industry specialists responsible for China’s most dynamic sectors, including energy, environment, construction, and transportation.
Ricardo began his Foreign Service career by completing an intensive one-year Mandarin language training course at the Foreign Service Institute, followed by a three-year tour as a Commercial Officer in Taipei at the American Institute in Taiwan covering a range of sectors, including education, environment, publishing, consumer goods, and machinery.
